N13 Prince engine: what to ask before you buy

The N13 is the 1.6 turbo petrol in the 114i, 116i and some Minis. Chain noise, carbon and the right sump are the checks that matter on a used engine.

A small petrol engine in the Hamburg workshop

The N13B16 is the Prince 1.6 turbo used in the F20 114i and 116i, and it is related to the engines in the Mini Cooper. People look for a used one because the cars are worth less than a dealer long block. The chain and the sump are where those bargains go wrong.

Where it was fitted

Confirm N13 rather than N20 or B38. All three have lived in small BMWs, and all three are the wrong engine for each other's computers. The stamp is short and it is often oily. Photograph it. A 116i badge has covered more than one of these families across the years.

Chain and carbon

Prince engines are known for timing-chain stretch. A rattle at cold start is the symptom if the engine is still in the car. On a pallet, ask whether the chain and guides were replaced and look at the front cover for fresh sealant, which at least shows the cover has been off. Carbon on the intake valves is normal for this direct-injection engine. Budget a walnut blast later if the car idles badly. Do not expect a used unit to arrive with bare valves.

Mini and BMW are not automatic

A Mini Cooper S engine of the same era can share architecture and still have a different sump, a different turbo and a different map. We do not sell a Mini engine as a 116i engine unless the code and the pan match the VIN you sent. If you are repairing a Mini, say so. The N13 guide covers the BMW fitment. The VIN covers the rest.

A small engine, the same rules

The N13 is light and people handle it carelessly. The turbo inlet, the high-pressure pump and the plastic coolant joints still crack if the engine is rolled off the pallet. Lift it. Do not drag it.

Fit a new chain kit at the same time if the history is unknown and the front cover is already due off for a seal. Doing that job once, with the engine out, is the difference between a cheap 116i repair and a second removal next winter.
